The basil cultived in Pra'
The absolute peculiarity of the Ligurian climate, especially in the area of Pra’ created a particularly suitable habitat for cultivation of this aromatic herb. Many factors - from microclimate to peasants’ expertise, from vicinity to the sea to the presence of water streams, from the strength of the sun to the breezy climate - contributed to the acknowledgement of the basil cultived in Pra’ as the absolutely best variety, due to its perfect balance of taste and flavour. The peculiarities of this variety are tender, light green, medium-small leaves with oval convex shape, with a delicate aroma, without any trace of the mint aroma typical of other basil varieties.
Ligurian basil is grown either in a sheltered environment, like heated greenhouses and tunnels or in outdoor fields.
Greenhouses have marked the hilly landscape of Pra’ since the twenties of the past century, firstly with small-sized wooden and glass facilities, which are often still operating today, thereafter with wide-span greenhouses, the so-called “large-wide type”, which are more than twice high, are equipped with effective ventilation systems and show a much improved indoor-light intensity.
Now in Liguria greenhouse cultivation of basil is characteristic mainly of the areas of Genoa and the Ligurian West Coast, whilst outdoor field cultivation is practiced mainly in the areas of Albenga, La Spezia and Sarzana.
