Basil – scientific name Ocimum Basilicum – derives its
name from the Greek word “basilikos”. i.e. royal,
belonging to a king, then it means King’s Herb.
Basil originated from Asian and
African tropical regions, then it spread everywhere
around the Mediterranean basin and in
almost all warm and temperate countries
in the world.
Basil has permanently linked a part
of its history to Liguria, due to
mild climate and the care
that the inhabitants of
Liguria have always
devoted to this herb.
The genus Ocimum,
collectively called Basil,
includes over 60
herb and shrub species,
different in shape,
growth habit,
essential oil
composition
and colour.
Among the many basil species, Genoese basil is absolutely
the most known one, cultivated in many zones of Italy,
even if the most valuable variety is the Ligurian
basil, specifically the basil grown in the
Pra’ suburb of Genoa.
In 2005 the Genoese basil
cultivated in Liguria was
granted the Protected
Designation of Origin
status (PDO)
by the European
Community.
